juwi solar Inc. Sells its Largest Solar PV Project to Date in the U.S.
25 January, 2010BOULDER, CO – juwi solar Inc. said today it will sell its 16 megawatt (MW) DC Blue Wing Solar Project in San Antonio, Texas to Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS). The Blue Wing Solar Project was developed, designed and permitted by juwi solar and includes a 30-year power purchase agreement with CPS Energy, one of the nation’s largest municipally-owned utilities. As part of the transaction, juwi solar will also provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the project and will operate the facility for DEGS in the initial years.
“The project has brought together quality leaders in the utility-scale energy generation industry, including Duke Energy, CPS Energy, First Solar and SMA,” noted Michael Martin, managing director of juwi solar. “The solar industry will thrive so long as technologically-sound suppliers, innovative utility companies, reputable construction companies, and communities such as San Antonio and Bexar County support projects like Blue Wing.”
This transaction is another example of juwi solar’s continuing success in the nascent U.S. utility-scale solar market. In 2009, juwi solar completed the construction and energization of a 2.2 MW solar facility in Hackettstown, New Jersey and juwi solar also recently commenced the construction of two more multi-megawatt projects: the 12 MW Wyandot Solar facility in Upper Sandusky, Ohio and a 15 MW solar facility in Jacksonville, Florida. The Ohio and Florida projects, which were also developed, designed and permitted by juwi solar, were sold to PSEG Solar Source LLC and included long-term power purchase agreements with AEP Ohio and JEA, respectively.
The sale of the Blue Wing Solar Project to DEGS is scheduled to close in the first quarter of 2010 and is expected to be on-line by the end of the year. When completed, Blue Wing will be the largest solar generation facility in the state of Texas. The project will consist of 214,500 ground-mounted First Solar thin film panels and is expected to create a significant number of green jobs and opportunities during the construction and operation phases.
“First Solar is pleased to be supplying modules for this landmark project, which further extends our relationship with juwi solar to promote clean, affordable solar electricity,” said Lisa Bodensteiner, First Solar vice president of business development for North America. “We commend CPS for taking the initiative to implement solar energy generation in Texas and recognize the state’s substantial potential for solar energy deployment.”
